One day the teacher asked to look at them. As Daniel went forward he surreptitiously licked one palm, wiped it on his pants, then exhibited it.  \u201cDaniel,\u201d said the teacher sternly, \u201cif you will find another hand in this schoolroom as filthy as that, I will let you off this time.\u201d The quick-witted Daniel promptly held out his other hand. \u201cThat will do,\u201d sighed the teacher. \u201cYou may take your seat.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Having concluded, Lincoln laughed as loud as any of his hearers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:14px\">From <em>The Inner Life of Abraham Lincoln: Six Months at the White House<\/em> by Francis B.
